Mental Health tips
What is good mental health?
Taking care of our mental health is not something we should do when we are worried, feeling bad, anxious or stressed. It's actually something we should constantly think about and really invest in, just like our physical health.
Staying on top of our mental well-being is good for us now, but it also helps us cope with difficult times in the future. It can also reduce our risk of physical health problems over time.
There are lots of things we can do to look after our mental health and well-being every day - start with these top 7 tips.
1. Reframe unhelpful thoughts
The way we think, feel and behave are all connected. Sometimes we develop patterns of thought or behavior that aren't helpful, so recognizing them and taking steps to think about things differently can improve your mental health and well-being.
2. To be present
If we take the time to be aware of ourselves and be in the present moment, noticing our own thoughts and feelings and the world around us, we can gain a better perspective. Sometimes this is known as being more mindful.
3. Get a good night's sleep
Quality sleep has a big impact on how we feel mentally and physically, so it's important to get enough.
4. Connect with others
Spending quality time with friends or family, talking to someone about how you feel or finding ways to help other people can all help you stop feeling lonely and improve your mental health and well-being. It can be online, over the phone or with someone in person.
5. Live healthy
Being active, enjoying the outdoors and eating a healthy and balanced diet all affect how we feel. Also, eliminating bad habits such as smoking and limiting alcohol and caffeine can have a positive effect on our mood.
6. Do something for yourself
From enjoying your favorite hobby, learning something new, or simply taking time to relax, it's important to do things that make you happy, like trying a new hobby or learning a new skill.
7. Write a letter to the future you
When you're feeling good, think about what you would want to say to your future self if things got worse and you found yourself needing more support. Reminding yourself of what's keeping you positive right now can help you get through those tougher times in the future.
